deja vu all over again

Okay, people...I apologize in advance for the fact that there are no pictures attached to this blog entry. I suppose if this happens with child #2, 3, or 4 I will be much more relaxed about it, and will document it with all sorts of funny photos. This was not quite the case today, however.

In the words of Inigo Montoya, let me explain...no, let me sum up. About six years ago I had the pleasure of caring for my soon-to-be niece and nephew, Annalise (3 mos.) and Andrew (16 mos.) It was the summer Brad and I got married, and with three kiddos under the age of three, his sister Barb wisely enlisted a little help. So I watched the younger two every day for a few hours while the oldest, Alex, went to preschool.

One day while I was tending to the littlest one, Andrew, who wasn't quite walking yet, but definitely in an exploratory stage, decided to go check out the garage. I noticed it had gotten very quiet in the family room, where he had been previously playing, so I investigated. There, at the bottom of the garage steps, was Andrew, playing in an ever-growing puddle of dark corn syrup....from a glass bottle, no less! Thank goodness, Andrew was completely unharmed by the whole incident, but it was quite the mess.

Blast forward to March of 2009 - today, while I was busy prepping dinner in the kitchen, Brett decided to toddle over to the pantry. He loves clanging bottles around in there, and every once in awhile he gets ahold of the paper napkins, which is ever so fun. But today, as I glanced over in his direction, something looked just a tad bit suspicious. Upon further investigation, I discovered my 14-month-old son playing in an ever-growing puddle...of molasses. Coincidence, no? Thank goodness, Brett also was completely unharmed, as long as you don't count the emotional trauma of being forcibly removed from his sticky playground. Somehow, my little brute had managed to unscrew the lid to the jar - no breakage necessary! Even after wiping, mopping and dissolving it all up with hot water and vinegar, we are still finding little sticky spots in random places downstairs. All this, of course, after I painstakingly scrubbed my floors yesterday. Oh, and after Brett's bath today, too.

That little stinker!

P.S., in case you need some sort of visual documentation, I recall a rather comical post off Rachelle's blog...but I think wheat cereal is a lot easier to clean up than molasses, don't you? ;)
